Frequency: Weekly – Tuesdays from 7:00 PM to 9:30 PM, from October 7 to December 9, 2025
Duration: 10 lessons – total of 25 hours
Materials: One meter of white or ecru cotton fabric, small embroidery scissors and large fabric scissors, measuring tape, hand sewing needles (a kit), thimble, neutral basting thread, one spool of white thread and one of black thread, white tailor’s chalk, a small box of pins, a pincushion, a seam ripper – additional materials (zippers, buttons, fabric, etc.) will be defined during the course based on the instructor’s guidance.

The Basic Tailoring course is designed for beginners who wish to learn the fundamental techniques of sewing and garment construction.
Lessons will take place in the workshop, where participants will benefit from demonstrations by the instructor and will begin applying what they learn from the very first class.
They will learn how to create basic garments and will be able to modify or repair items from their own wardrobe—either for personal use or as a foundation for future professional activity.
At the end of the course, a certificate of attendance will be issued to those who attend at least 8 out of the 10 scheduled lessons, which may be eligible for the recognition of 2 ECTS credits.
Program
- Lesson 1: Introduction to sewing, tools of the trade, basics of hand sewing, introduction to the sewing machine
- Lesson 2: Basic hand stitches, simple machine seams
- Lesson 3: Understanding materials, fabric behaviour, guidelines for layout and cutting
- Lesson 4: Accessories, buttons, zippers and elastics – how to replace or attach them
- Lesson 5: Introduction to pattern making, measurements and creation of a basic skirt or T-shirt pattern (to be agreed with the instructor)
- Lesson 6: How to adjust or correct an existing pattern
- Lesson 7: Hems and finishes, how to alter defective garments or adjust sizing (let out, take in)
- Lesson 8: Personal project – altering a garment using upcycling techniques or creating a simple piece (at the participant’s discretion)
- Lesson 9: Personal project – altering a garment using upcycling techniques (at the participant’s discretion)
- Lesson 10: Presentation and evaluation of the final project with the participation of a professional tailor
Outcomes
To provide participants with basic sewing skills through hands-on lessons in the workshop, enabling them to create simple garments, carry out repairs and alterations on existing clothing, develop autonomy in sewing, and lay the groundwork for a potential professional path in the field.

Francesca De Luca
Graduated in Architectural Sciences, she later specialized in pattern making and fashion tailoring. With over ten years of teaching experience in various Academies, she has been part of Ferrari Fashion School for several years and also works as a professional consultant in the Milanese fashion industry.
